The go-to places for mookata and beancurd are joining forces to offer diners a sizzlingly-sweet experience during their Thai barbeque meal. Household F&B brands Siam Square Mookata and Rochor Beancurd House are launching a series of soya bean desserts infused with traditional Thai favourites such as Green Tea and Milk Tea, which will be available at five Siam Square Mookata outlets across the island.
The partnership between the two homegrown brands was formed out of a business transaction that grew into a friendship. Owner of Siam Square Mookata, Keith Lee, was in talks to take over the Rochor Beancurd House outlet at Upper Thomson with the rapid expansion of his Thai BBQ and steamboat chain. Due to rising overheads, the owner of Rochor Beancurd House, Jason Koh, was letting go of the outlet. The two entrepreneurs formed a connection as players on the same team in the cut-throat F&B industry, and their shared passion for serving tasty yet affordable food.
Seeing the opportunity to turn this fortuity into a delicious endeavour, Keith suggested a collaboration with Rochor Beancurd House so that diners will still get to enjoy silky beancurd and traditional soya bean drinks at Upper Thomson even though Siam Square Mookata will be taking over the original space. “As business owners, it is important for us to continuously reinvent and seek opportunities in any circumstances. It was by chance that I got to know Jason when we took over Rochor Beancurd House’s Upper Thomson outlet. Instead of merely completing the deal, we became friends and realised that the relationship between Siam Square Mookata and Rochor Beancurd House could go further,” Keith of Siam Square Mookata explains.
They worked closely to conceptualise three new soya bean desserts that will be made available on Siam Square Mookata’s menu for more sweet options to pair with a hearty, heady and savoury BBQ meal.
Bite into smooth slivers of grass jelly, made using Rochor Beancurd House’s original recipe and doused in refreshing Thai milk tea with an order of Grass Jelly with Thai Milk Tea. Crunchy gravels of brown sugar imported from Thailand top off the dessert, giving the silky serving an added crunch and a well-balanced sweetness. For traditional beancurd with a Thai twist, go for the Soy Beancurd with Green Tea – smooth and silky beancurd immersed in brewed Thai green tea, and served with Thai green tea syrup. A cold drink is a welcome treat during any barbeque and steamboat meal – sip on a cold Green Thai Tea Soy Milk for an aromatic and thirst-quenching beverage.
“Mookata” a style of table barbecue and hotpot, has found many fans in Singapore since its introduction close to a decade ago. Originating from Thailand, the term is derived from ‘mu’ (denoting pork) and ‘kratha’ (hot plate or pan). Siam Square Mookata, a pioneer in the Thai ‘Mookata’ Style of communal dining, started operations within a food centre in 2013 and has since expanded to 11 outlets all over the island. Its name has become synonymous with Mookata dining – weathering the volatile F&B scene with its emphasis on offering casual dining with reasonable prices and high quality, tasty ingredients.
“Fortunately for Siam Square Mookata, people have been flocking to our outlets ever since the end of Circuit Breaker as they crave for communal meals and quality time with family and friends more than ever. Business is even comparable to pre-Covid-19 days. We hope that our new dessert additions, launched in collaboration with Rochor Beancurd House, will make the mookata experience even more memorable for our diners,” Keith adds.
Siam Square Mookata’s new desserts in collaboration with Rochor Beancurd House is available at Siam Square Mookata outlets at Golden Mile Tower, Pasir Ris, Punggol, Upper Thomson and Yishun. Siam Square Mookata currently has 11 outlets island wide and Rochor Beancurd House has two outlets at Geylang and Balestier.
