Not everyone knows how to be a great boss. But many can tell if they are enduring a bad one. So, what do we want to see in a boss so that we believe that he or she is a good boss? Here’s a list of traits and qualities that we think a good PR boss should have:

1.Ability to Communicate Clearly

  • Whether it is the vision, business strategy, goals, or tasks, clearly stating what he or she wants as an outcome is very important. Staff should not be made to guess what the boss means.
  • This point is even more important in the PR department as we thrive on communication. PR is communication!

2.Empathy to Care and Connect Sincerely

  • Staff wants to feel cared for and valued on a personal level.

3. Set Clear Roles and KPIs for Each Staff, and Keep the Team Aligned

  • With each knowing, one must do necessarily how to work as a team as it keeps the entire team focused and aligned to their goals.
  • Good bosses are chess masters, they are not playing checkers

4.Be honest and Give Consistent Feedback

5. Coach vs Complain

  • Good bosses do not reprimand their staff in front of the whole office or constantly reminding them how bad the job was done, instead, he/she points out the mistake and show how to do better.
  • Encourages one to think critically so when a similar situation arises, one knows exactly how to handle it.

6.  Praise and Encourage Growth

  • Show appreciation to staffs who tries hard and/or does more. Encourage staff to grow and be more productive

7. Fair

  • A good boss does not play favourites, which will demoralize the team.

8. Reward Good Performance

  • Staff should be rewarded for meeting or exceeding job requirements.

Good bosses create an environment where employees enjoy and are proud to work in. “The conventional definition of management is getting work done through people, but real management is developing people through work.” – Agha Hasan Abedi “A good manager is a man who isn’t worried about his own career but rather the careers of those who work for him.” – H.
